USCG-approved Type II vs Type III vests vs arm floaties: Type II or III vests are the only real life jackets

Arm floaties and inflatable rings are toys, not life jackets—skip them. Type II works for calm inland water, Type III gives more freedom to move while staying buoyant. Look for soft foam, adjustable straps, and non-negotiable crotch straps. Inflatable vests are risky (one puncture and they’re useless), and used foam degrades over time. A new USCG-approved vest runs $25–50 and lasts a couple seasons.
