Registered ECC vs Unbuffered ECC: Registered ECC wins for real workstation builds

Registered ECC (RDIMM) is more stable and scales better for tower workstations with lots of RAM, thanks to an extra register chip that buffers memory commands. Unbuffered ECC (UDIMM) is cheaper and works in some consumer boards, but tops out at lower capacities and is less reliable under heavy loads like simulations or rendering. Check your motherboard’s QVL — if it supports registered ECC, buy that; if not, you’re stuck with unbuffered ECC, but that board probably isn’t a real workstation.
