EV-rated extension cord vs standard extension cord: Standard cords are dangerous for EV charging
Standard orange extension cords can’t handle the sustained high current of EV charging — they overheat, slow charging, and risk fire. EV-rated cords use thicker 10 or 12 AWG wire, better insulation, and weatherproof connectors rated for continuous use at your charger’s amperage. Get the shortest length that works, match the plug type (NEMA 5-15 for Level 1), and don’t cheap out — $50–150 is worth it to avoid a meltdown.
