2mm pads are basically glorified mousepads—they protect the desk but do almost nothing to level out bumps or absorb vibration from a heavy board. 5mm smooths minor unevenness and deadens thock and clack better, but firmness matters more than thickness; dense rubber or neoprene beats soft foam.
